3 Tips For Storing Your Extra Furniture

If you have some extra furniture that doesn't fit in your house right now but that you really like and don't want to get rid of, one of the best things you can do with that furniture is put it inside of a storage unit. A storage unit provides you with a safe place to put your furniture until you need it again. When it comes to putting furniture in a self-storage unit, there are a few precautions you are going to want to take.

Rent a Climate-Controlled Storage Unit

You are going to want to rent a climate-controlled storage unit. A climate-controlled storage unit will best mimic the conditions that you find inside of your home and will help keep your furniture safe. A climate-controlled storage unit will protect your furniture from damage due to temperature changes and humidity.

Clean Your Furniture

Second, if you want your furniture to come out of storage in good shape, you need to clean your furniture before you store it. What cleaning will look like will vary depending on the type of furniture you have. For upholstery, that will mean steam cleaning your furniture and vacuuming it well.

For wood furniture, that will mean wiping it down and perhaps protecting your furniture with some wood polish. For metal or plastic furniture, that will involve wiping down the furniture.

Take your time and make sure all your furniture is clean and dry. Packing your furniture when it is clean will protect your furniture from damage and stains.

Break Things Down

Third, you are going to want to break down any large pieces of furniture that you have. For example, if you are putting a set of tables in storage, take the legs off. If you are putting a bookshelf in storage, take it apart. You can't take apart all your furniture, but for the furniture that you can take apart, it is best to do so. It is easier to store your furniture when it is broken down into smaller parts and your furniture is less likely to get damaged during the moving and storing process this way.

It is a smart idea to put any screws or bolts into a bag and attach them with tape to the furniture item that they belong to.

If you need to move some furniture out of your home for a while, you need to rent a climate-controlled storage unit, clean your furniture thoroughly before you move it to storage, and break down your furniture into manageable parts.
